Newspaper Printing Press

Newspaper printing dates back to Ancient Roman times, when public officials would post news of the day in a public space daily. The first mass newspaper printing press was not invented until the Middle Ages. It took a further 150 years before Johann Gutenberg invented the first moveable newspaper printing press in 1447. The first regular newspaper, Relation oder Zeitung, was printed using this unique newspaper printing press in Germany at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The first English language newspaper was printed using a newspaper printing press in 1622. This weekly newspaper was known as ‘the Weekly Newes’ and provided Englishmen with up to date information on business matters and political issues.

Newspaper printing was a costly process, which inhibited its popularity for many centuries. It wasn’t until 1840, when a new economical style of newspaper printing press techniques was invented, the costs of newspaper printing were dramatically lowered and contributed to publicity popularised ‘penny papers’. From the 19th century onwards, Newspaper printing became a popular and important method of not only periodically documenting history but of providing up to date regional and national news and stories on a local and national scale.

Today newspapers are printed on newsprint, a low cost and non-archival paper that has an off white cast and a distinctive feel. A modern newspaper printing press is designed to employ a long web of paper rather than individual sheets, which allows the combination of high speed printing at a relevantly low cost. Print presses have long moved on from Gutenberg’s first newspaper printing press and today include techniques such as thermal, digital, computerised and laser printing, as well as CTP Direct to Plate Technology.

No matter how technology will change the way news is delivered, the newspaper will always have a place within the British publics hearts.
